Interview w/ Bob of The Rebel Arms…
RTR: The Rebel Arms.. I know you’re from Grimsby and that’s about it…who the heck is The Rebel Arms?
A: The Rebel Arms are a punk rock band based out of Grimsby Ontario. Formed in 2011 started writing and put out our first 5 song s/t ep. March of 2012 will see us back at The Loft studio with our friend Caleb Moroz to record our second ep Violence. Lyrics and vocals by Bob, guitars by Nate and drums by Josh. We are fans of beer and enjoy all things smokable. Our bassist was recently mauled by koalas while feeding them grapes and is in critical condition.
RTR: Somebody who was at your recent show in Hamilton at The Casbah described your sound as “melodic hardcore.” Accurate? For folks new to The Rebel Arms, how would you describe your sound?
A: Melodic Hardcore wouldn’t be too much of a stretch, although I wouldn’t consider us a hardcore band. We are very melodic and aggressive, yes. We all have very diverse influences and to me that is what comes through.
RTR: Your lyrics aren’t necessarily overtly political, but there does seems to be a lot of social commentary going on. What are you writing about? Personally, I really dig the tunes Skulls & Crosses and First World Problems…
A: I have my political views, as everyone does. They are sure to make an appearance here and there but really I am just writing about my experiences, feelings, and views on the world. Skulls & Crosses, which will be on our new ep, is a middle finger to religion, I don’t know how many churches there are in the Niagara/Hamilton area, but there are most definitely too many. First World Problems, from our 2011 s/t ep, is basically about taking a closer look at our lives here, in the “first world”, it’s not horrible, but it could be a hell of a lot better.
RTR: I just noticed you’ve got a new EP coming out called “Violence”…tell us what that is all about.
A: Violence is the title track of the new ep. Our culture is obsessed with violence and fear plain and simple, it’s scary. The answer to almost anything seems to be to fight and kill if you want your way in this world, people are scared of their neighbors for nothing more that they don’t know them or disagree about “moral” issues. It’s an “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” mob mentality, and I don’t really fell it leaves room for individual thought.
Here are the lyrics for violence;
“ill never believe all the violence that i see i’ll just keep on pretending that its my eyes playing tricks on me killed in the street blood, bone and meat concrete and raindrops and human disease violence! kill or be killed yeah its dog eat fucking dog or maybe take some pills we’re fucking just for pleasure and killing just for thrills its an angry fucking world for all you angry boys and girls take a look around its beyond terrifying murdering the neighborhood community is fucking dying killed in the street blood, bone and meat concrete and raindrops and empty lives and empty dreams violence! kill or be killed yeah its dog eat fucking dog or maybe take some pills we’re fucking just for pleasure and killing just for thrills its an angry fucking world for all you angry boys and girls violence! kill or be killed yeah its dog eat fucking dog or maybe take some pills we’re fucking just for pleasure and killing just for thrills its an angry fucking world for all you angry boys and girls”
RTR: When can we expect the new EP to drop and what else is in the plans for The Rebel Arms?
A: We are hoping to have it finished and available to the public by Rebel Fest, April 14th. We will be giving away whatever copies we can manage to bring there as well. We have a couple shows in the works around the area in the next few months so check out our facebook or twitter for udates on that. We want to play as much as possible, write as much as possible and just have as much fun as possible. When it’s not fun anymore we’ll call it a day.
